Mother Nature demonstrates the various types and shapes ice can take on Elizabeth Bay, Manitoulin Island, Ontario. First there were small floating clumps, then the water level rose with a few days' melting, then it froze over the clumps, carrying with it thousands of tiny shards. The currents pushed a floating layer of ice on top of the recent freeze--to give us a total of three layers. The mountain of ice in the background heaved up like that because it hit a piece of rocky ground that was above water level.
